Robert Paul Huefner, Professor Emeritus, University of Utah

With a BS in civil engineering (UofU) and a masters in city planning (MIT), my career began in regional, and then strategic, planning for the governments of Salt Lake County and of Utah. For Utah it was as a member of the small personal staffs of Governor George Clyde and then of Governor Cal Rampton – to coordinate state program planning and intergovernmental government relations. This led to a year on the personal staff of U. S. Treasury Secretary Joe Fowler.

With a doctorate in finance (Harvard), my career moved to the University of Utah with appointments as professor of political science and the first Governor Matheson Professor of Health Care Studies, and to developing the graduate program in public administration and the Matheson Center for Health Care Studies.

Community leadership roles have included (by appointment of governors Matheson and Bangerter) those for the Governor’s Committee on Executive Reorganization, the Tax Review Commission, and the Task Force on Health Care Costs. They also included The Coalition for Utah’s Future, Envision Utah, Western State Budget Reviews (editor), HealthInsight, and the Commission on the Operation of the (U.S.) Senate.

My hope is that we, with others, can sustain and build – from Utah’s many present and future cultures – a community that is creative, collaborative, and just.
